About me
Roma Flowers has designed lighting for theatre, music concerts and dance. A recipient of a New York Dance and Performance Award (a.k.a. Bessie) for her lighting designs, she considers herself fortunate to have worked with such diverse artists in the field of theatre, dance and music such as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, David Dorfman, Doug Elkins Dance Company, The Joan Miller Dance Players, Lawrence “Butch” Morris, David Murray, Meshell N’degeocello, ODC San Francisco, Otrabanda, Shapiro & Smith, Urban Bush Women, Doug Varone and Dancers, Via Theatre and Kevin Wynn Dancers. She is a member of United Scenic Artists, local 829 and the winner of a Knight Of Illumination Award (KOI).
Her work has been seen in New York in several dance venues including the Dance Theatre Workshop, The Kitchen, PS122, Dance Space Project at St. Marks, LaMaMa, the Joyce Theatre, Symphony Space and City Center as well as throughout the United States and Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, continental Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. Since relocating to Fort Worth, Texas in 2005, some of the productions she has designed include several of Hopestone Dance productions in Houston’s Wortham Arts Center, Fort Worth’s Jubilee Theatre’s productions of Cookin’ At the Cookery, A Lesson Before Dying, and Crowns, Texas Woman’s University’s production of The Glass Menagerie, and the Out of the Loop Festival’s production of Sola:Women Dancing Women”.
Currently, Roma is the Resident Lighting Designer for Dark Circles Contemporary Dance (Dallas, TX) and professor emeritus at Texas Christian University’s School for Classical & Contemporary Dance where she taught courses in Dance Production, Lighting Design for Dance, and The Camera in Dance.
