About me
Originally trained in music composition and introduced to the theatre as a composer and musical director, David Martin Jacques has been designing lighting, sets, and projections for the past 37 years. His work spans across Europe, Asia, South America, Scandinavia, and North America. David has designed for some of the top directors in the world at venues such as The Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, The English National Opera, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Tokyo National Theatre, Central City Opera, Teatro San Carlo, The Canadian Opera Company, The Kirov in St. Petersburg, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dallas Theatre Center, Disney Hall, The Norwegian Opera, and many more theatre, opera, dance, and special event organizations.
David served as lighting design consultant for Disney Creative Entertainment where he helped design many attractions and live entertainment spectaculars for Disney Orlando, Euro-Disney, Epcot, and MGM. David also designed the lighting for numerous architectural projects including high-end residences, commercial buildings, restaurants, and houses of worship.
David's teaching career began in 1988 when he served as visiting professor for The University of Missouri, Kansas City. He then moved to Dallas to rebuild the Graduate Stage Design Program as Head of Stage Design at Southern Methodist University. David left SMU in 1998 to serve as Head of Stage Design at California State University Long Beach, where he served in this position for the following twenty-five years. David recdently retired from this position and is presently teaching as Professor Emeritus. However, his prolific professional design career continues.
In 2017, David, along with fellow lighting educators Steve Woods (SMU) and Stan Kaye (University of Florida) created the popular weekly podcast LIGHT TALK with The Lumen Brothers. This podcast is presented as an educational service for their professional design colleagues, as well as for students learning and faculty teaching lighting design throughout the world. LIGHT TALK has been invited to present their show live for five consecutive years at Live Design International (LDI) in Las Vegas, and performed the show at the 2018 ETC Cue Workshop interviewing CEO Fred Foster. LIGHT TALK with The Lumen Brothers is in its 8th season, with over 400 episodes, has interviewed over 70 lighting artists and industry experts, has over 500,000 downloads, and has listeners in over 115 counties and territories.
